THIS LETTER IS DATED MAY 16 1861 AND IS SENT FROM CAMP SCOTT (YORK, PA) ON ORIGINAL CAMP LETTER HEAD WHICH READS "DEATH TO TRAITORS - OUR COUNTRY ALWAYS". CAMP SCOTT WAS A TRAINING FACILITY FOR THE UNION ARMY AND OPENED IN 1861. IN 1863 THE NAME WAS CHANGED TO CAMP FRANKLIN. IN 1865 AFTER THE WAR ENDED IT WAS DEMOLISHED. I WILL PARAPHRASE HIGHLIGHTS OF THE LETTERS CONTENT. IT IS A LETTER TO HIS SISTER WHO IS IN BALTIMORE. HE ASKS HER IF SHE COULD MAKE HIM 2 FLANNEL SHIRTS BECAUSE THE GOVERNMENT ISSUED SHIRTS DO NOT COME UP HIGH ENOUGH ON THE NECK. STATES HIS PAP WILL LIKELY VISIT THEM. HE WISHES FOR AN OPPORTUNITY TO STRIKE ONE BLOW FOR THE STARS & STRIPES. SIGNED "BROTHER BILL".. FRONT & BACK.. RARE RARE LETTER HEAD!!

McCLURE WAS A PROMINENT CHAMBERSBURG CITIZEN WHO SERVED IN PA HOUSE OF REPRESENTITIVES, MET WITH GENERAL ROBERT E. LEE DURING ONE OF THE CONFEDERATE OCCUPATIONS OF CHAMBERSBURG. HIS MANSION WAS BURNED & HE WAS CAPTURED/RELEASED BY CONFEDERATES IN 1864. STATES HE CAN PROVIDE 350 MEN "ANDERSON TROOPS & REGULARS" WHO ARE WELL ARMED BUT LACK HORSES. THE 3RD TELEGRAPH IS NOT DATED EXCEPT FOR THE 1862 PRINTED YEAR. FROM SOMEONE OF LAST NAME WILSON. STATES HE IS ON THE RAILROAD 1/2 MILE NORTH OF STATE LINE. REQUESTS 4 SCOUTS BE SENT TO HIM AS REBEL CALVARY ARE ON THE ROAD FROM HAGERSTOWN AND INFANTRY HAS ALREADY ARRIVED IN HAGERSTOWN (DAYS PRIOR TO ANTIETAM). 4TH ITEM IS A LETTER (NOT ON TELEGRAPH CO FORM) DISPLAYING FRUSTRATION WITH LACK OF RESPONSE IN REGARDS TO HORSES BY EITHER A.K. DEC? 10TH 1862 FAIRLY ROUTINE CONTENT DISCUSSING PAY AND POSSIBLE VISIT IF THEY GET CLOSE BY.
72.LETTER WRITTEN BY UNION SOLDIER H.W. PINKERTON TO SARAH HADE ON AUGUST 6TH 1863 APPROX A MONTH AFTER THE BATTLE OF GETTYSBURG. LIKELY THE MOTHER OR GRANDMOTHER OF ANNIE HADE WHO'S PAINTING WAS SOLD 2 AUCTIONS AGO. VERY INTERESTING CONTENT THAT REFERENCES GETTYSBURG AND/OR THE REBEL RETREAT. LETTER STARTS WITH PINKERTON STATING HE IS IN POOR HEALTH. HE WAS IN HARRISBURG WHERE HE WAS DISCHARGE AUG 3RD. THEN HE WRITES "HOPING THIS MAY FIND YOU AND FAMILY IN GOOD HEALTH AND THAT MAY NEVER HAVE TO WITNESS ANOTHER SCENE (LIKELY MEANING GETTYSBURG) AS YOU PEOPLE OF THE CUMBERLAND VALLEY HAVE WITNESSED IN THE PAST FEW WEEKS". ENDS LETTER STATING DOESN'T HAVE THE STRENGTH TO WRITE MORE. FOUND AN EMAIL IN FAMILY DOCUMENTS WHERE A FAMILY FRIEND RESEARCHED H.W. PINKERTON AND FOUND THAT HE APPARENTLY RECOVERED & LIVED INTO HIS 70'S BEFORE PASSING IN 1902.
